Benwerren has been operating since 1978 providing a safe space and time out for women and children in need. Anita, Amy and Emma share about the impact of Benwerren’s ministry in their lives and the lives of their children.
Emma’s Story
I would like to share my experience being at Benwerren. It’s a very peaceful place surrounded by very welcoming people, it made me feel at ease with the lovely home cooked meals and new and old faces along with comfortable surroundings.
Benwerren made me feel safe after the hardship my son and I went through. I see why many people have called Benwerren their second home and a place of rest and healing.
I truly recommend if you haven’t been to Benwerren to go and see the wonderful people and environment it has to offer.
It was wonderful to see young mum Emma and her children settle into a permanent home after being displaced and homeless for a number of years due to family violence.
Amy’s Story
Over my life I have personally battled with mental health issues, including post-natal depression and anxiety. I have encountered first-hand the public mental health system and the severe inadequacies in support and services.
Despite having hit rock bottom and struggling to get through each day, I have been classed as being somewhat functioning which meant it was hard to get the right support. I ended up at hospital a few times but would just be sent home.
My mental health worker found out about a place called Benwerren. So the kids and I packed to go away, as soon as I arrived I felt a sense of calmness. I fell in love with Benwerren. The volunteers and staff were lovely and caring. They cook you amazing food, there were activities for the kids so I could rest. I have since been back many times and still felt the same love and care, it’s my go to place when I know I need to recharge my batteries. This place is utterly amazing, and I am truly indebted to them for the support they have offered me!
Anita’s Story
I came to Benwerren nine years ago to escape domestic violence. I had with me my three-year-old boy and seven-year-old girl. I was frightened, fragile and traumatized, Benwerren was my lifesaver.
It was my refuge and a home for my kids. Coming back on a regular time out when life got tough, it supported my mental health recovery and gave something positive for my kids to look forward to (school holiday program).
Now I work for Benwerren and volunteer supporting youth and their families. I want to give back to a place that has been such a blessing in my life.
